CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Rachael Tolliver was still holding out giving any information to Mr. Jefferies or me. If she knew where Rosie’s money was coming from, she wasn’t willing to share. Since she was so hostile towards me, I was a little surprised when she didn’t blab to everyone that I’d purchased Betsy’s farm.

It appeared my only option was to search through all the boxes remaining in the attic and barn. I had promised Mr. Jefferies I would concentrate on looking for anything to help him figure out Rosie’s estate. Sticking to that promise wasn’t easy though. Everywhere I looked, something more interesting drew my interest away from my project. Why did everything pertaining to her have to be so complicated?

I still didn’t know why she had stored all those books by R.S. Fallon in numerous places. There had to be an explanation. I didn’t know where else to look. I still wanted to find the typewriter. Would there be an explanation for that somewhere as well?

Piling my red curls up on top of my head, I headed to the barn. There were still a lot of boxes and trunks to sort through in the attic, but I was tired of being cooped up inside. Today I would tackle the barn loft.

After two hours, I had found lots of interesting things: old-fashioned clothes, old dishes, pictures, but no papers explaining Rosie’s money. There was even more jewelry. The jewelry I’d found in the house had been appraised at a staggering amount. Because of all the antique furniture and jewelry, I had increased the insurance I carried. Most of what I’d found couldn’t be replaced. I wondered if Rosie had realized the value of what she had here.

Sweat was trickling down my front and back. My shirt was stuck to me like a second skin. I’d taken off the tee-shirt I started out with and only had on a camisole now. I was still hot. The humidity was worse than the temperatures in Arizona.

The loft covered a big portion of the barn itself. Trying to make some semblance of order out of things, I had divided up the area to make it easier to tackle. There was one more trunk in the far corner of the section I’d been working in. After checking it out, I’m quitting, I promised myself. The typewriter, as well as any papers for Mr. Jefferies, was still among the missing.

Opening the trunk, I found a beautiful handmade quilt lying on top of more books along with a note. My mother made this for me when I was little. It always felt like her arms were around me when I used it. It’s yours to enjoy now.

My eyes teared up as they always had when I read her notes or journals. She had treated others badly because she’d been treated badly. But inside, she had craved the tenderness she missed from her mother.

Every box or trunk I opened held the promise of a surprise. I never knew if there would be a note from Rosie, or another piece of information about my family.
